Serena Hotel Rwanda hosts Genocide survivors

The 28th of April marked the 4th time that Serena Hotel has contributed towards the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The “Walk to Remember” was organised in commemoration of the Genocide in Rwanda.

Over 200 people – comprising Genocide survivors, government officials , civil rights organisations, Serena Hotels Country Manager and staff, as well as the hotel guests – walked two kilometres from Kigali city centre to Kigali Serena Hotel. The walk was followed by a time of reflection and testimony with speeches by representatives of CNLG, FARG Umudugudu, and Abahumurizanya Association.I believe the same should be emulated by Uganda Hotels.

The commemoration programme concluded with an assortment of donations from Serena, which included three cows and a check of Rwf3 million, to be shared among the groups.
“We walked to draw the attention of the public so that they can get to realize the need for this commemoration,” said Charles Muia, the Country Manager of Serena Hotels Rwanda.

Adopted Sudanese Chimps find new Habitat

Sarah, Medina, Minni and Cocoa, four chimpanzees that were rescued from South Sudan and and where relocated to Uganda Wildlife Educational centre for rehabilitation in July 2011, have found a new home at the Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria managed by Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust.
The chimpanzees, which were being shipped to Egypt for suspected pet trade, were rescued after a tip off from Tour Operator. The South Sudanese government swiftly informed Uganda Wildlife Authority about the attempted smuggling of these primates, who in turn made the necessary arrangements to have the chimps brought into Uganda. At UWEC, a series of health checks were carried out and a successful rehabilitation process, forming a close bond with Mr. Michael Ocan, their care taker. Michael escorted them as they left UWEC by boat to the island. He will spend some time at the island until they get assimilated to their new environment at Ngamba Island.

The concept of launching the Tourism Police came as a result of positive and negative occurrences, according to the State Minister for Internal Affairs, James Baba. He related incidences that have seen tourists lose their property or have their lives threatened by criminals posing as taxi drivers or boda boda riders. He explained, that these incidents have a negative impact on the tourism industry as they prevent repeat visits and further recommendations once the tourists go back home.

In the same breath, he narrated a separate but positive incident where an Australian tourist got so fascinated by birds while in Bwindi that she moved far away from the group and got lost in the forest. Her colleagues were out of their skin with worry and contacted the Uganda Wildlife Authority who in turn sought help from the Uganda Police to beef up their search party of rangers. After several hours of diligent searching, she was found stricken with fear and hungry but in one piece. She was extremely grateful and spread the news about the care and efficiency of the combined team. To date, the State Minister said, the country receives the highest number of tourists from Australia.

German scientists discover intelligent Ugandan chimp in Ngamba Island

A group of German scientists have discovered that the Ugandan chimpanzee named “natasha” is more close to human beings than her fellow apes and therefore described her as a genius and intelligent apes.
The 22 year old “natasha” who lives in Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria, can communicate with people and manipulate them for instance she demands extra food by clapping at caretakers during feeding time. She also gets her fun by playfully beckoning people to fling food her way, then spraying them with water. Africa Gorilla Safaris
According to Dr Joshua Rukundo, the sanctuary’s operations director who confirmed that the german scientists had carried out the exercise also said that the sanctuary has an electric fence surrounding their feeding area to ensure no chimp escapes but natasha always does. She will pick a green branch and throw it at the fence to check if the power is on and will escape as soon as she doesn’t see a spark.
Chimpanzees, which carry up to 98.7 per cent similar DNA to humans, have near-human levels of intelligence as they are able to pick up behavioral practices from people around them.cheap gorilla safaris
